Here is an explanation of the SLED Certified Security Training that each Officer must take.

Primary Basic: (Mandatory) A basic knowledge of what you can do as a legal SLED Certified Security Officer on the property you protect. To become an ” Unarmed Officer”. This class is all you will need to be a basic SLED Certified Officer. Taking this class does NOT include weapons, Handcuffs, Use of Force and Authority to arrest. You will be able to work as a SLED Security Officer and  wear a uniform, observe and report with no arrest authority if you choose this class alone. 4 hour class.

Primary Plus: (Optional) This class is basically an upgrade to certify you in many things such as Handcuffing, Use of force and Handguns. This class gives you the same authority as a Sheriffs deputy on the property you protect. YOU CANNOT take this class unless you have been to the “Primary Basic“. You can take both “Basic” and “Plus” in the same day. 8 hour class.

To break it down: In other words, To become a “mall security guard” all you need is Primary Basic because usually they don’t let you have too much authority. However, everything an officer needs to carry on his duty belt for example handguns, Taser, OC Pepper Spray, Batons and Handcuffs will have to be trained by a person that is Certified to train you with these weapons. This training falls under the Primary Plus Training. WE OFFER THIS TRAINING.

Here is what you need to know:
You can hold more than 1 SLED Card. This is a great thing because some companies need part time Officers. So, you can be an Unarmed Officer at 1 company and become an Armed Officer at another. This also allows Officers to get more hours by being flexible working for more than 1 company. YOU WILL GET A SLED CARD FOR EACH COMPANY YOU WORK FOR.

All SLED Certified Security Officers are required to have “Primary Basic” at a minimum.

NOTE: When you get done with any of the SLED training regarding “Primary Basic” or “Primary Plus” you will not be certified at that instant moment. YOU WILL have to send in your application to SLED with the training records from our company, with the SLED fees, finger prints, photo, etc. We walk you through this whole process. Once approved by SLED, then you will be an  “official SLED certified officer”.

Taser and OC Pepper Spray? We cannot fit Taser and OC Pepper Spray in the above classes because of the amount of time required. To do all of our training will take 2 full days to be a SLED Certified Armed officer with Handcuffing, Weapons, Taser and OC Pepper Spray. We can price a full package for this option per student or a group price.

Welcome to our Security page, learning how to become a

SLED Certified Security Officer

Here is some information you will not find anywhere on any other Security Companies website, except ours. We try to help future students / officers understand what is required and how to go about starting a new career.

To become a SLED Certified Security Officer you must have a clean background. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it will have to be offenses that SLED does not see as a Felony or multiple Misdemeanors. Candidates for security are supposed to have good morale character and work ethics.

Before you read on, Yes, we offer all the required training right here at SC Training .

Our training is detailed and we will come to you! We also provide 1 on 1 classes if the need is immediate. Our training pages are very informative and will get you started in the right direction.

…..

To become a SLED Certified Security Officer

you will have to take the minimum class called “Primary Basic“. It became official on January 17, 2017. When you take this class, you will be a “SLED Certified Unarmed Officer” with NO arrest authority. This class is 4 hours and when finished, you could apply for Unarmed positions like working at the mall, store security and posts that they just want a security presence.

If you desired, your next class would be to take the “Primary Plus” class. This class is the 2nd part of the SLED training. This class will give you the arrest authority to carry handcuffs. It also goes into some of the laws to teach you how to not violate the rights of others regarding their freedom of movement (4th amendment) when and if you need to arrest or stop and frisk someone. This class is 4 hours and when you are done you will be a “SLED Certified Unarmed Officer with the authority to arrest”. This is what a lot of Security companies look for in an applicant. In other words to get to this point would be 8 hours of training with “Primary Basic” class and the “Primary Plus” class. Yes, you can do both of these classes “Basic” and “Primary Plus” in 1 (8 hour) class.

Now, you can upgrade to become a “SLED Certified Armed Security Officer”. To do this, you would simply request this option so that during the “Primary Plus” Training, it would be inserted in the class. SLED requires all this plus the weapons portion to be done in at least 8 hours? I am going to tell you, with the weapons training because of going to the range, we are about 9 – 10 hours, a full day. When you finish this class, you will be a “SLED Certified Armed Security Officer” and now, more marketable to land a job at many security companies in South Carolina. Yes…you can take the “Basic”, “Plus” and “weapons” training all in the same day…a long day, but that depends on the size of the class.

Do we offer Taser and OC Pepper Spray? Yes, just click the blue links.

We hope this was helpful. Don’t forget to “like” our FB page for this GREAT information.

Primary Basic and Primary Plus are explained here.

  1. Primary Basic (Mandatory): To basically become a “Mall security guard” or to meet the minimum requirements by SLED. This means no “arrest authority”, no “use of force” training. This is a 4 hour class.

The following is a part of the Primary Plus Class.

Primary Plus is basically what makes an officer have arrest powers and carry different types of weapons.

  1. Weapons Certification: To carry a handgun on your posts. This is part of the Primary Plus Training, if selected.
  2. OC Pepper Spray: To carry OC Pepper Spray on your post. This is part of the Primary Plus Training, if selected.
  3. CEW (Taser): To carry a Taser on your post. This is part of the Primary Plus Training, if selected.
  4. Handcuffing: To have arrest powers this is a must. This is part of the Primary Plus Training, if selected.
  5. CWP: Civilian training to carry your weapon legally as a concealed weapons holder.

To help you understand “Primary Plus” better:

A. You can ask for the Authority to arrest, Use of force and Handcuffing with the Laws and nothing else, no weapons at all. This is the bare minimum for “Primary Plus”. If you take this, it allows you to carry handcuffs and make arrests.

B. You can certify in Taser and NOT with a handgun or OC Pepper Spray.

C. You can certify in OC Pepper Spray only and NOT do the handgun and Taser.

D. You can certify in the handgun only and NOT do the OC Pepper Spray or Taser.

E. You can certify in all of the above and become a “Premium” more marketable officer for any agency that is ready to hire.

F. With options B, C and D….you will be trained with handcuffing , use of force and some law because there are weapons involved in these options.

…..

We can do all your training from our training facility, or we can come to you!

We also do training on Saturdays and Sundays!!!!

SLED Security Weapons Training

To be an “Armed” SLED Certified Security Officer in South Carolina, you must have had the “Primary Basic” class 1st. The “Armed” portion falls under the “Primary Plus” class.

….

Option 1. If you have had the Primary Basic class, then you can upgrade your SLED card to Armed with the 4 hours of training. $110.00 if you bring your own weapon and bullets. Includes range fees.

Option 2. If you are taking “Primary Basic” and “Primary Plus” together, then you can take the Armed portion that same day in the 8 hours of training. $135.00 if you bring your own weapon and bullets. Includes range fees.

If you do not have a weapon?

Important: Whether it is option 1 or 2. SLED regulations read that you must qualify with the weapon you will be carrying. So, you must have a weapon at class or know the type of weapon you will be carrying so you can rent that type at the shooting range. Add another $20.00 for rental of weapon and bullets.

….

If you have not taken any of the classes (Primary Basic or Plus) then you must start from fresh. Click here.

Either way, we can do it all for you. In fact, a 2 day class can train you in everything you need, Primary Basic, Primary Plus, Taser and OC Pepper Spray. This will make you the most marketable security officer around.
