The 2 types of Security Classes
Choosing the right class is important as the “Authority Levels” are different.
You DO NOT need to be employed by a Security Company to take the classes.
HOWEVER, you have to be hired by a Security Company so they can process your training documents to SLED and SLED will Approve or Deny your Certification.
Class 0026
Primary Basic and Primary Plus taken together WITHOUT Weapons qualifications.
This is the bare minimum class you can take.
This class gives you the authority to work as a UN-Armed SLED Private Security Officer. Your Authority will be just like a sheriffs deputy on the property you are contracted with EXCEPT you will not carry a Lethal Weapon (handgun). You need this class if you decide later that you want to carry Pepper Spray, Taser and a Baton.
You will still have to be trained in anything you carry on your duty belt when it comes to Lethal and Non lethal weapons.

Class 0027
Primary Basic and Primary Plus taken together W / Weapons qualifications.
This class gives you the authority to work as a Armed SLED Private Security Officer once you get hired by a Security Company and SLED has approved your application. Your Authority will be just like a sheriffs deputy on the property you are contracted with IF your post orders articulate this. For this class, you must bring the weapon you want to qualify with.
Time: 8 hours / Varies
Price: $312.00. We supply range, weapon (if needed), class training.
Not included:
- Range fees and Target. You should allow for $35.00 to cover this.
- You must bring Ammo also….if you do not have Ammo, you will have to purchase this at the range.
- Fingerprinting and all the other stuff required to send to SLED and fees.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Remember, you are NOT a Certified Security Officer once you finish the class.
YOU MUST be hired by a licensed Security Company and then they must submit all your paperwork to SLED so that SLED can review your background and make the decision to Approve or Deny your application.
